License Plate Recognition

Automated License Plate Recognition Usage And Privacy Policy

This policy describes The Taubman Company LLC’s (“Taubman”, “we”, “us” or “our”) practices concerning the automated license plate recognition (“ALPR”) system used in our parking structures.

Why We Collect Your License Plate Number (“LPN”) Information

When you enter and leave our parking structures, a camera reads the characters on your license plate and saves them to our ALPR system.  We use those characters in order to track vehicles entering and leaving our parking garage, and help you, the driver, find parking spaces.  The license plate characters also are later used to assist you in finding your vehicle if you forgot where you parked.  If the parking fee is paid in advance at one of the pay-on-foot kiosks, the license plate characters also will assist you in expediting your exit and opening the exit gate automatically.

Who Has Access To Your LPN Information

The following categories of employees and contractors have access to or use our ALPR system:

  • Parking staff
  • ALPR system technicians

All such persons receive training prior to operating or using the ALPR system.  This includes training on the proper use and handling of LPN information in order to safeguard customer privacy.  Additionally, we require parking staff to receive annual refresher training from the Parking Garage Manager or his or her designee.

Monitoring The ALPR System

The ALPR system is monitored on a daily basis by Taubman personnel.  If it appears that service is necessary, a service call is made and ALPR system technicians can examine the system to ensure it is properly functioning and capturing LPN information and that the security of LPN information is maintained.  Note, however, that while the information collected by our ALPR system is generally accurate, it might fail to correctly read LPNs.  For example, a dirty or damaged license plate or something that obstructs it, such as a bike rack, could interfere with the proper reading of the LPN.  If this happens, you will not be able to use the system to assist you in finding your vehicle if you forget where you parked it.

Security

The ALPR system is subject to rigorous operational, administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect LPN information from unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification, or disclosure.

Sale, Sharing, Or Transfer Of LPN Information

We do not sell or transfer LPN information for any purposes.  Except as described below, we do not share LPN information for any purposes other than those described above.  On rare occasions, we might share this information with law enforcement personnel, or other third parties, but only pursuant to a lawfully issued subpoena, warrant, or legal process.  We also might share this information when necessary in order to protect our rights, our property, and our customers.

Custodian Of The ALPR System

Taubman is the custodian of this ALPR system and is responsible for the implementation of this privacy policy.

Retention

Taubman retains LPN information for up to seven (7) days, unless otherwise required by law to retain it for a longer period of time.

Updates

Any updates to this policy will be posted on our website at https://beverlycenter.com/lpr.
